Cyanobacteria are the oldest extant organisms that we know of. Dating back to over 2 billion years ago, cyanobacteria played a big role in the history of our planet, being responsible for the Great Oxidation Event that gave rise to the atmosphere we have today. Here we see a stromatolite, a cyanobacterial fossil, dating back from the Eocene.
