The human eye has five photoreceptors. There are three types of colour-sensing cone cells. There are also the rods, which help us see in very dim lighting conditions. Until around 20 years ago, it was thought that only the cones and rods sense light. But another class of cells was discovered – the so-called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells.
